The team at Zeeland Veterinary Service (ZVS) would like to congratulate Dr. Susan Myers, DVM, on her election to the House of Delegates of the American Veterinary Association (AVMA).
The AVMA has more than 105,000 members in the United States. “I am excited and honored,” Myers said. “It is an honor to represent my fellow veterinarians as a woman, a person of color, a West Michigan business professional, and as a PetVet doctor.”
The AVMA exists to protect, promote, and advance the needs of all veterinarians and those they serve. The association's mission is to lead the profession by advancing the science and practice of veterinary medicine to improve animal and human health. The organization develops positions on key issues advancing the veterinary community’s ability to provide crucial veterinary services. They provide educational accreditation and certification programs that protect and elevate the standards of veterinary care. In addition, the AVMA provides products and services that help veterinarians protect the health and welfare of animals and educates the public to advance both animal and human health.
Myers joined ZVS after her 1998 graduation from the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine. She has worked with all species, with emphasis on small ruminants and companion animals. She has been active in organized veterinary medicine on a national level through her involvement with the American Association of Small Ruminant Practitioners as past president and member of the executive board. In addition, Myers—who is of Puerto Rican descent—is bilingual.
As a member of the AVMA House of Delegates, she will participate in the decision-making process on issues that are forefront in the veterinary community and their impact on veterinary practice and human health. She will also serve as a liaison between the AVMA House of Delegates and the American Association of Small Ruminant Practitioners to elevate the practice of veterinary medicine and ensure the safety of our nation’s food supply.
"I look forward to working with professionals in the industry to improve animal welfare, regulatory policies, and address the concerns of veterinary practitioners, agricultural producers, and our many stakeholders", said Myers, who will be a member of the AVMA House of Delegate for eight years.
