Best Food For Senior Dogs

As your beloved furry friend grows older, their dietary requirements will also change. But how can you determine the ideal food for them? Our veterinarians from Zeeland offer insights on the best senior dog food options and their respective benefits.

When is My Dog Considered a Senior, and What Food Should They Eat?

It isn't easy to give a universal answer to this question, as the expected lifespan of a dog depends on its breed and size. Typically, smaller dogs can live for 15-20 years, while larger dogs usually live for around 12 to 15 years. Larger dogs tend to age faster and are considered "older" at around 6 years old, while small dogs typically reach middle age at around 8 years old.

Are There Any Nutritional Concerns To Consider For Senior Dog Food?

Yes, there are two major things to consider when determining the best dog food for senior dogs

The first is to try and keep it calorie-low. Just like with people, a dog's metabolism slows down as they age. In order to prevent obesity, it is important to make sure our elder pups aren't chowing down just a little too ferociously!

Another important aspect is to ensure that senior dogs have a diet rich in high-fiber food options. Constipation can be very uncomfortable for dogs, and if it becomes severe, it can cause additional gastrointestinal problems. Since maintaining good gastrointestinal health can be challenging for elderly dogs, choosing dog food that is high in fiber is recommended to promote regularity and overall health.

Will my Senior Pet Be Healthier if I Change Their Food?

Senior dogs suffering from diabetes, kidney failure, or liver disease are liable to require special diets to help control their condition. It is best to consult with a vet about your dog's diet if they are sick and you are concerned about the impact of their diet.

Dogs who have or are at elevated risk for heart disease benefit from lower-calorie senior dog foods that help keep their weight down; low-sodium recipes are preferable.

If you have a diabetic or pre-diabetic dog, it is important to choose a dog food that slows down the absorption of food. Our vets at Zeeland suggest special diabetic diets as they tend to raise blood sugar at a slower pace, which reduces the chances of health complications. These diets are low in fat and have high fiber content. We advise consulting with your vet for dietary recommendations for your senior or diabetic dog.

Many senior dog food brands make a point to include higher-quality protein sources than standard dog food; this helps seniors maintain healthy body weight without putting unnecessary strain on their aging kidneys.

As mentioned earlier, older dogs often struggle with constipation. The best dog food for older dogs contains high fiber, which helps prevent constipation and keeps their bowel movements regular.

Should I Be Concerned if My Senior Dog Does Not Eat Their Food?

It is relatively normal for older dogs to have some loss of appetite. Causes for sudden appetite loss are hugely carried both in scope and severity; your dog could suffer from simple nausea brought on by gastrointestinal problems, or they could suffer from the effects of cancer.

If your senior dog has suddenly begun to demonstrate an unexplained loss of appetite, it is best to speak with your vet and have them rule out any potentially serious causes, including dental disease, diabetes, kidney disease, or cancer.

If your dog's appetite loss is not due to any serious medical conditions, it might be because they are tired of their usual food. To make it more appealing, you can add some chicken broth, water, or a small amount of canned food to their dry kibble. Alternatively, you can prepare a simple meal of cooked chicken and barley or cooked lamb and rice. These homemade meals are nutritious and easy on their stomach if your older dog is feeling nauseous.

Is a Prescription Diet Best for My Senior Dog?

It really depends on your senior dog's specific situation. There are some cases where a medical prescription dog food might be the best option, while in other cases, simply switching to a healthier alternative could do the trick.
